Kolkata: Kolkata Metro is set to launch its Noapara Airport line by July, pending approval from the Commissioner of Railway Safety. This translates into Kolkata getting its first airport metro link.
The hub station, formerly known as Jai Hind Metro Station, is situated 13 meters below the century-old Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport and is recognized as one of Asia’s largest underground transportation facilities.
This section is part of Phase One of the Yellow Line, the 18-kilometer Noapara-Barasat corridor. Metro Railway originally planned Phase One as the three-kilometer Noapara-Dum Dum Cantonment stretch, securing CRS approval. However, the phase was subsequently extended by four kilometers.
With a CRS inspection planned in April for the Dum Dum Cantonment-Bimanbandar stretch, the airport metro is expected to start operating by July or even June of this year.
For now, platforms One and Two will be operational. Platforms Three, Four and Five belong to the Orange Line or New Garia- Airport Corridor and will meet the Yellow Line at the airport.
The airport metro Station has a daily rider count of 80,000, covers 29,000 SQM, including a huge concourse and five platforms.
The station features two subways. One connects to airport Gate No One, equipped with two walkalators for airline passenger convenience. The second subway provides access to Jessore Road, serving passengers from Birati, Barasat, Madhyamgram, and other areas in North 24 Parganas.
A 17,497-square-meter stabling yard with seven tracks is located 300 meters from the station. The station will feature eight ticket counters, including two accessible for people with disabilities, along with six escalators, four lifts, and two emergency staircases.
