Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) plans to implement the West Bengal Thika Tenancy Act (Acquisition & Regulation) to regularise slum land ownership for slum dwellers.
Once the land ownership is regularised by KMC, the West Bengal government will build proper houses under the ‘Banglar Bari’ scheme and hand these over to the rightful owners.
This move is planned after some recent allegations that land promoters are deliberately putting fire in the slums. The idea is to ensure eviction of the slum dwellers, albeit in a roundabout way.
The Kokata Mayor Firhad Hakim has received quite a few complaints from the slum dwellers after some of the recent fires when allegations of builder promoter collusion has come up.
According to the slum department of the KMC, in 90 per cent of the slums across the city, the land has already been regularised under the Thika Tenancy Act and handed over to the rightful owners. The remaining 10 per cent will soon be covered under its ambit.
Some legal complications are preventing the regularisation of this 10 per cent of land. These will soon be resolved under the Act aimed at development and equitable utilization.
