Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) plans to start a nursing school and a para-medical training school in a public-private partnership model.
Aimed to reduce the number of contractual employees in healthcare and fill up with trained on-the-roll employees, the schools will come up in the Chetla Sabji Bagan area which incidentally falls under Mayor Firhad Hakim’s ward.
In the first phase, the nursing school will be set up with 60 seats. 20 of these seats will be reserved for Kolkata Municipal Corporation while the remaining 40 seats will be filled by the private party.
For the 20 seats reserved for KMC, meritorious students who have cleared the Joint Entrance Examination from economically weaker sections will be eligible.
The KMC will bear all the educational expenses of these 20 students though they have to arrange their own food and accommodation. For the remaining 40 students entering through private concerns, the few structures will be determined by KMC only so that there are no exorbitant expenses for studying like in private nursing schools.
In the second phase, the para-medical training school will also come up with a PPP model. A tender will be called to determine the private partner.
The paramedical training school will primarily offer training in three areas lab technicians, OT technicians and critical care technologists.
Each department will have 40 seats making it a total of 120 seats. Here also 40 seats will be reserved for KMC where EWS students will be provided free training. KMC will be determining the fee structure of the rest too.
