Mumbai to establish Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) in Film City with Rs 400 crore central funding; WAVES 2025 summit secured for Mumbai, boosting creative tech and media education.

Mumbai: Mumbai will establish the Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) in Goregaon’s Film City with Rs 400 crore financial assistance from the central government.

The initiative, announced by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the World Audio-Visual & Entertainment Summit 2025 (WAVES 2025) in New Delhi, aims to develop a hub for creative technology education.

Centre, Maharashtra Government Collaborate on IICT

The IICT will focus on education and innovation in fields such as film production, animation, visual effects (VFX), digital content and Web 3.0 technology.

The Maharashtra government has allocated land within Film City for the institute. The project is being developed in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

According to Fadnavis, the institute will contribute to India’s growing creative sector by providing a structured academic framework for emerging technologies in media and entertainment.

“This project will serve as a key centre for innovation in the creative technology sector,” he said.

WAVES 2025 Summit to be Hosted in Mumbai

The announcement of IICT was made alongside the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Maharashtra government for WAVES 2025.

Maharashtra has secured the hosting rights for the summit, scheduled from 1-4 May 2025, at the Jio Convention Centre in Mumbai.

WAVES 2025 is expected to bring together industry professionals from over 100 countries, covering sectors such as broadcasting, film, animation, digital media, gaming, advertising and social media.

The summit will feature initiatives like WAVES Bazaar, a marketplace for investment opportunities and WAVES Accelerator, aimed at fostering industry innovation.

With the establishment of IICT and the WAVES 2025 summit, Mumbai is positioning itself as a key centre for creative technology and media education in India.
