New Delhi: The Delhi government on 15 April announced strict action against private schools that have allegedly imposed unjustified fee hikes, with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta asserting that such institutions cannot harass parents or students under any circumstances.
Speaking to the media, CM Gupta confirmed that notices are being dispatched to all schools against which formal complaints have been lodged by parents.
“Many parents have approached me with grievances. No school has the authority to threaten children or impose abnormal fee hikes. Rules are in place and must be followed. If any institution is found violating them, consequences will follow,” she said.
The issue gained public attention after a protest broke out last week outside a private school in Dwarka. A group of parents gathered to oppose a reported fee hike, claiming their children were being confined to the school library during regular hours, a situation they dubbed “library arrest”.
Reacting to the Dwarka school incident, Education Minister Ashish Sood revealed that an inspection team had already visited the premises.
“We’ve received several complaints about repeated fee hikes. All SDMs have been directed to carry out inspections and collect school responses through an 18-point compliance questionnaire,” he said.
A dedicated committee, comprising the deputy director of education and the director of accounts, has also been formed to look into the issue.
To facilitate parental grievances, the education department has launched a special email helpline for reporting excessive or unjustified fee increases.
