Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has decided to enlist all registered slums within its limits as thika properties.
Accordingly, KMC Mayor Firhad Hakim announced the opening of submitting fresh applications to be enlisted as ‘Thika’ tenants. This will start from 1 May and will remain open for six months.
All registered slums renamed as Uttaran by the government will also be listed as Thika properties.
The process was active earlier but was stopped in 2014. Now it has received the cabinet nod to resume the services.
Every thika praja or tenant earlier has to submit a return to the thika controller. The return contained details like name, parents’ name, area of the Thika under the tenant’s custody, the zamindar from whom the tenant got the Thika land and its location.
With no fresh applications being taken from 2014, people who were ignorant of this requirement were not receiving any civic services without this certificate
Whenever they approached for a mutation or a building, KMC asked them to obtain the certificate first.
All 3079 registered slums in Kolkata would be enlisted as thika land to prevent eviction of dwellers for real estate projects.
