New Delhi: State-owned engineering firm BEML Ltd has achieved a production milestone with the rollout of its 2,100th metro coach from its Bengaluru facility. Coinciding with the event, the company announced the establishment of a new manufacturing unit in Madhya Pradesh, signalling its strategic push to scale metro coach production capacity.
New Facility Planned in Raisen District
The Madhya Pradesh government has allocated 60.063 hectares of land in Umeria, Raisen district for BEML’s upcoming facility. The unit will be dedicated to manufacturing metro and mainline rolling stock, as part of efforts to decentralise production and strengthen regional industrial capacity.
The land allotment, facilitated by the Madhya Pradesh Industrial Development Corporation (MPIDC), is expected to support local employment and industrial growth in the region.
Metro Coach Equipped with Advanced Diagnostics
The 2,100th coach, built for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) through the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), meets Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) standards, allowing fully unattended train operations.
A key feature is the integration of India’s first Onboard Condition Monitoring System, comprising five real-time diagnostic modules to monitor:
Rail track condition
Overhead equipment (OHE)
Pantograph-OHE interaction
Arc detection
Rail profile analysis
These modules enable predictive maintenance and remote monitoring, aiming to enhance operational safety and system reliability.
Strategic Expansion in Line with Urban Transit Growth
BEML CMD Shantanu Roy said the new facility aligns with the company’s strategy to scale operations and support growing demand in both domestic and international markets. The Bengaluru-based manufacturer has been a key supplier to India’s metro systems since the early 2000s, with its coaches operational in cities including Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and Mumbai.
The expansion reflects a broader push to localise production, meet urban mobility requirements, and contribute to the national infrastructure agenda.
