Guwahati: The Assam government has introduced an artificial intelligence (AI)-based anchor to disseminate cabinet meeting highlights; a move aimed at improving information accessibility through digital tools.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the rollout of “Ankita”, an AI-generated anchor, via the social media platform X. The announcement coincided with the release of a video showing Ankita summarising recent cabinet decisions in Assamese. Key policy decisions included renaming Dibrugarh Airport after Bhupen Hazarika and approving a one-time grant for tea garden workers.
Tech-Driven Communication Strategy
The AI anchor is part of the government’s broader approach to incorporating digital technologies into governance. The anchor presented the information with human-like facial expressions and voice modulation, indicating the use of advanced generative AI tools.
Officials suggest the tool is expected to help simplify communication for citizens, especially younger, digitally active audiences. By delivering cabinet summaries in regional languages, the administration aims to bridge the gap between government decisions and public understanding.
Context and Recent Developments
This is not Assam’s first experiment with AI in public-facing roles. Last year, the state introduced “Iris,” an AI teacher at a Guwahati school. At the national level, Doordarshan Kisan launched AI news presenters “Krish” and “Bhoomi” to offer agricultural updates.
These developments reflect an emerging trend among government and public institutions to experiment with generative AI for public communication and outreach.
While the technology behind Ankita hasn’t been fully disclosed, the move reflects a growing inclination among Indian states to explore artificial intelligence in administrative functions. Analysts point out that the integration of AI tools in governance may raise questions about transparency, content authenticity, and public reception.
