Amaravati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the ambitious redevelopment of Amaravati, marking a significant revival of Andhra Pradesh’s capital city project with investments amounting to nearly Rs 58,000 crore.
Andhra Pradesh governor Syed Abdul Nazeer, the Chief Minister of the State N Chandrababu Naidu, Union Minister Rammohan Naidu, as well as the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Pawan Kalyan.
“NTR Garu envisioned a developed Andhra Pradesh. We have to make Amaravati and Andhra Pradesh the growth engine of the Viksit Bharat. We have to fulfil NTR’s dream,” stated PM Modi.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who returned to power in 2024, welcomed the Prime Minister at the event and honoured him with a traditional Dharmavaram angavastram. The CM also presented a specially crafted Kalamkari artwork featuring a portrait of PM Modi, underscoring the cultural roots of the state.
The Amaravati redevelopment, a flagship initiative envisioned by Naidu during his earlier tenure, had remained stalled until his recent political comeback. With renewed state focus, fresh investments, both domestic and international, and updated timelines, the project has now been relaunched with enhanced scope and vision.
The master plan for Amaravati includes the creation of thematic, eco-friendly urban zones such as Government City, Justice City, Finance City, Knowledge City, Health City, Sports City, Electronics City, Media City, and Tourism City. These “cities within the city” are designed to be non-polluting and purpose-built to support Andhra Pradesh’s long-term economic and social aspirations.
To ensure balanced regional development, industrial hubs will be developed around the capital’s periphery, accommodating high-intensity industries while preserving Amaravati’s core for civic and knowledge-based functions. The city is also being built as a self-financing model, with planners estimating that it will generate 2,700 MW of renewable energy from solar, wind, and hydro sources, positioning Amaravati as the world’s first city entirely powered by renewable energy.
Ahead of the Prime Minister’s arrival, Chief Minister Naidu expressed optimism on social media, writing, “Today is a proud and important day for the people of Andhra Pradesh. I warmly welcome Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji to Amaravati as he arrives to restart the development of our people’s capital. Amaravati stands as a symbol of our shared hopes and dreams. This restart marks a new chapter of growth for our state.”
The large-scale redevelopment of Amaravati is expected to catalyse economic activity, attract investments, and transform the state capital into a sustainable and globally competitive urban centre.
