Gangtok: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has virtually inaugurated several development projects in Sikkim on 29 May as part of the 50th Statehood Day celebrations.
Though he was scheduled to visit Gangtok in person, heavy rains disrupted his travel plans. Subsequently, he launched the projects through video conferencing from Bagdogra.
Most of these projects, worth Rs 750 crore, were related to road connectivity, health and education.
The projects inaugurated included a 500-bed district hospital in Namchi and a passenger ropeway in Pelling. These are critical to improving healthcare and tourism infrastructure in Sikkim.
A statue of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee was also unveiled in Gangtok’s Atal Amrit Udyan.
PMÂ Modi also released a commemorative coin, souvenir coin and postal stamp to mark Sikkim’s integration into India and recognise its achievements over the past five decades.
Over the years, Sikkim has seen progress in areas such as organic farming, tourism, education and infrastructure.
PM Modi exhorted that Sikkim is an example of how small states can achieve big milestones with focused planning and active participation of citizens.
