Kolkata: The West Bengal Transport Department has directed all buses to be fitted with grab rails at the doors and to have steps at a fixed height, making it easier to get on and off.
This must be particularly applicable for those buses carrying school kids.
Buses should be clean and tidy, as well as have a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher must are readily available and usable.
Without these measures, no new buses will be registered. The existing ones will not get their fitness certificates renewed.
The minimum height of the steps leading to a bus shall not be more than 25 CM from the ground so that passengers find it easy to board.
The distance between the first step and the gangway should not be more than 43 cm. The width of the doors should be at least 53 cm to allow passengers.
There should be adequate space between the seats, and the minimum space between the backs of the seats would be at least 66 cm
No iron angles on either side of a bus’ body will be allowed. The rear view mirrors must be large enough and should be fitted suitably.
