Kolkata: To enhance accessibility for visually challenged students, Jadavpur University’s Central Library has implemented ‘Sparsh’ software, enabling them to read all books in Braille.
The Sparsh software helps convert an actual book into Braille. It was installed today at the accessible library at the University earmarked for visually challenged students.
Sparsh was a brainchild of Prof Anupam Basu is a Raja Ramanna Chair Professor at Jadavpur University. While teaching at the Computer Science department of IIT Kharagpur, Basu and his students together developed the Sparsh software.
Currently, the staff at the library are being trained on different aspects of Sparsh. Later, these staff will help visually challenged students read all books using the software.
The University is looking for further infusion of funds from different quarters to further expand the project.
