New Delhi: India has formally requested additional units of the S-400 Triumf missile defence system from Russia, according to reports. The move comes in the wake of the system’s successful deployment during the recent Operation Sindoor, where it played a critical role in defending Indian airspace from attempted aerial incursions.
The S-400 systems were also visibly active during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent address from the Adampur airbase in Punjab.

Moscow is expected to respond positively to India’s latest request and begin the process of supplying additional missile units. The original $5 billion defence agreement between India and Russia, signed in 2018, covered the acquisition of five S-400 units. The system’s rapid-response capabilities and precision targeting have since become a cornerstone of India’s air defence strategy.
A day after Indian armed forces launched Operation Sindoor–which was launched as a response to the deadly Pahalgam attack–targeting strategic assets across the Line of Control, Pakistan attempted a retaliatory strike involving drones and missiles across 15 cities in the northern and western regions.
These threats were effectively intercepted and neutralised by India’s existing S-400 systems, further underlining their strategic value and prompting the government to expand its inventory.
