New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has achieved another significant milestone in its Phase 4 expansion with the successful completion of a key underground tunnel between Kishangarh and Vasant Kunj Metro Station on the Golden Line (Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridor).
Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) broke through the Vasant Kunj Metro Station after completing a 1,550-meter-long tunnel on 25 June.
The tunnel was excavated using a 91-meter-long Earth Pressure Balancing Machine (EPBM), an advanced TBM designed for urban tunneling. The completed tunnel lies at an average depth of 22.86 meters, with the deepest point reaching 30.25 meters.
This tunnel is one of two parallel circular tunnels constructed for the up-and-down movement of trains on this stretch.Â
Ensuring Precision and Safety
A total of 1,105 concrete rings were installed inside the tunnel, each contributing to a finished inner diameter of 5.8 meters. These segments were precast at a dedicated, fully mechanized casting yard in Mundka, using a steam curing system to ensure early strength and durability.
To minimize disruption in the densely built area above the tunnel path, DMRC employed sensitive ground monitoring systems. These instruments tracked movements of nearby structures, ensuring that no damage occurred during excavation.
Expanding the Capital’s Metro Network
As part of Phase 4, DMRC is constructing 40.109 kilometers of underground metro lines. Of this, the Aerocity–Tughlakabad corridor alone includes 19.343 kilometers of underground sections.
With each project, DMRC aims to enhance connectivity across Delhi with minimal surface disruption, reinforcing its commitment to safe, modern, and efficient urban transportation.
