Aizawl: The Mizoram government has decided to corporatise its power and electricity department.
This will be part of the state government’s strategy to enhance administrative efficiency and public service.
The proposed plan involves unbundling the department into three key functional segments. The Generator, Transmission and Distribution segments will operate as independent SBUs.
Each SBU will manage its assets and operations autonomously. This restructuring aligns with the Ministry of Power’s guidelines on corporatising state power departments.
Each unit can focus on its core responsibilities without overlapping functions. This autonomy could lead to more effective decision-making and improved service delivery to the public.
The restructuring will also lead to the adoption of more outsourcing and franchising models. This will, in turn, bring in expertise and efficiency from external partners.
This move aligns with the Electricity Act, 2003 and follows the Central government’s policy directions. Mizoram could set a benchmark for other North-Eastern states to follow.
