Bengaluru: The Karnataka government is preparing to launch a state-level Artificial Intelligence (AI) Mission aimed at building regulatory, skilling, and innovation frameworks around AI technologies, especially generative AI. The initiative will be a part of the upcoming Karnataka IT Policy 2025–30, aligning with the Centre’s IndiaAI programme.
State Minister for IT & BT Priyank Kharge recently underscored the need for structured regulation of generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and DALL·E, which are increasingly being used across sectors such as governance, education, and industry.
“We cannot ignore the growing impact of generative AI. It’s time to create a balanced policy framework that supports innovation while ensuring accountability,” Kharge said during a recent address.
The state’s proposed AI Mission is expected to focus on five core areas:
Framing regulatory guidelines to ensure ethical and safe AI deployment
Supporting research institutions and AI startups
Promoting workforce skilling in AI technologies
Enabling sectoral use cases in agriculture, healthcare, education, and governance
Establishing AI innovation hubs through public-private partnerships
While the Centre’s IndiaAI initiative is shaping national-level strategies, Karnataka aims to implement practical frameworks at the state level. Bengaluru’s well-developed tech ecosystem is likely to support this effort, enabling pilot deployments and policy testing for AI governance.
Experts suggest that state-level missions like this could serve as sandbox environments for responsible AI innovation, especially in emerging areas like predictive agriculture, remote diagnostics, and smart public services.
