Kolkata: The Kolkata Metro will raze sections of the Kavi Subhash New Garia station with cracks on pillars and will rebuild it completely.
Thr cracks in platform pillars were detected more than 10 years ago. Heavy showers in recent weeks widened the cracks.
Subsequently, Kolkata Metro has brought forward the planned raze-and-rebuild operation.
The platform meant for Dakshineswar-bound trains will be demolished and rebuilt. However, not the entire station will.be rebuilt.
The damages were being regularly monitored. There was an extensive repair job scheduled after Durga Puja.
However, the recent rains accelerated the damage and forced the hands of the Kolkata Metro to start immediate demolition. Otherwise, there could have been a serious threat to passenger safety.
The planned overhaul is based on recommendations by railway consultants RITES. They have finalised a rehabilitation plan for the affected platform following a detailed structural assessment.
An e-tender has been floated for this job. Bidding starts on 5 August and closes on 19 August.
Until New Garia reopens, Shahid Khudiram, the second last station on the Blue Line, will serve as the terminal.
