Kolkata: The West Bengal government is implementing a new ambulance service on national and state highways soon.
Anyone can avail of these ambulance services by dialling 108 to assist trauma victims in reaching hospitals quickly.
As part of the initiative, 110 ambulances will.be deployed along the highways. This will comprise 35 advanced life support units and 75 basic life support units.
These ambulances will be positioned strategically every 50 km along national and state highways. Each unit will serve a 25 km radius for emergency medical services.
The service aims to address the critical need for assistance during nighttime accidents when help is scarce.
This will be the first instance of West Bengal’s National Health Mission (NHM) operating ambulances for highway accident victims.
40 of these ambulances belong to the health department. A tender has been floated to operate the services.
The ambulances will have GPS and Internet connectivity for traffic management. They will maintain communication with emergency control rooms.
A trauma care specialist will guide staff remotely based on injury severity. Specialised training is being planned for handling trauma cases.
Accident-prone areas are being identified by traffic personnel for strategic placement.
