New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on 12 August approved Phase-1B of the Lucknow Metro project in Uttar Pradesh for Rs 5,801 crore, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced.
The new 11.165 km corridor will connect Charbagh to Vasant Kunj, extending the metro network from the city’s east to west and improving connectivity to densely populated areas.
With 12 stations, seven underground and five elevated, Phase-1B is expected to be completed within five years. Upon completion, Lucknow’s operational metro network will expand to 34 km.
Implemented by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation, a joint venture between the Centre and the state government, the new phase will enhance access to historic and commercial hubs such as Aminabad, Yahiyaganj, Pandeyganj and Chowk.
It will also serve important landmarks including King George’s Medical University, Bara Imambara, Chota Imambara, Bhool Bhulaiya, Clock Tower and Rumi Darwaza.
The existing Phase-1A, operational since 2019, spans 22.87 km with 21 stations between CCS Airport and Munshi Pulia. The expansion is seen as a critical step towards easing congestion and improving public transport in Old Lucknow’s narrow and crowded streets.
The UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath hailed the decision as a milestone in the state’s development journey, attributing it to the “guidance and support” of PM Modi. Defence Minister and Lucknow MP Rajnath Singh also welcomed the approval, describing it as “a boon for daily commuters” and expressing gratitude to the PM, CM and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal for supporting the city’s metro growth.
Officials said the project would not only boost urban mobility but also contribute to the city’s tourism potential by providing easier access to heritage sites.
