Chennai: Southern Railway is set to take a major step forward in passenger safety and security with the implementation of advanced Video Surveillance Systems (VSS) across its network.Â
Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has awarded Magellanic Cloud Ltd., through its wholly owned subsidiary Provigil Surveillance Limited, a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) for deploying IP-based CCTV systems at 441 D and E category stations and upgrading systems at 43 major stations, including Categories A1, A, and B. The project is valued at approximately Rs 85 crore.
With this initiative, the Southern Railway aims to provide a safer travel environment for the millions of passengers who use its services daily. The new VSS will include high-definition IP cameras at stations and Railway Protection Force (RPF)/Government Railway Police (GRP) posts, supported by a robust networking infrastructure for uninterrupted real-time monitoring.
The system will be powered by AI-enabled Video Management Servers equipped with facial recognition and advanced video analytics. These features will allow for early detection of unusual activities and faster incident response, strengthening overall security preparedness. Scalable storage solutions will ensure that large volumes of video data are securely managed in compliance with cybersecurity standards.
This project builds upon earlier technology-led safety initiatives by the Railways and reflects the Southern Railway’s commitment to adopting next-generation systems to safeguard passengers.Â
