Agartala: Tripura has unveiled the State Disaster Management Plan for the FY 2024-25. The plan underscores the critical importance of integrating technology and artificial intelligence (AI) into disaster management efforts to minimise loss of life and property.
A host of initiatives at a total cost of Rs 50 lakh were launched under this plan. This included the Technology Demonstration Unit, Civil Defence Training Scheme, 26 automated weather stations and rain gauges, the Disaster Management Equipment Verification Portal and the Change of Land Use (Diversion of Land) Portal.
The Civil Defence Training Scheme will train 2,880 volunteers. Thousands more will receive hands-on training at the Technology Demonstration Unit in Hapania, Agartala.
The 26 automated weather stations and rain gauges installed across the state will provide accurate and real-time weather forecasting essential for disaster mitigation. There are plans to establish a Doppler Weather Radar Station in Belonia.
The Equipment Verification Portal will allow seamless tracking of disaster management equipments stored at the district, sub-division and TSR battalion levels.
The Change of Land Use Portal aims to streamline and enhance transparency in land conversion approvals. This will promote a more business-friendly environment in the state.
Disasters in Tripura like Cyclone Sitrang (2022), Mocha (2023), Remal (2024) and severe floods in 2018 and 2024 highlighted the urgent need for better disaster response mechanisms.
