Agartala: Tripura has officially become the third Indian state to achieve full 100 per cent literacy.
This places the state alongside Mizoram and Goa, and marks a major step in India’s educational progress.
Tripura’s literacy rate reached 95.6 per cent in FY 2024-25, up from 93.7 per cent in the previous fiscal.
This growth was primarily driven by grassroots efforts under the ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram.
This initiative includes the establishment of 943 Social Consciousness Centres. In addition, more than 2200 volunteer educators were deployed across the state.
On 17 March last year, 3581 of 4597 candidates passed the Foundational Literacy and Numeracy Assessment Test. The number increases to 13,909 out of 14,179 in December, while 5819 out of 5896 passed in March 2025.
Tripura’s literacy journey has been consistently improving over the decades. From 20.24 per cent in 1961, the numbers jumped to 60.44 per cent by 1992, 73.19 per cent in 2001 and 87.22 per cent in 2011.
The ULLAS initiative seemed to have provided thr final spurt. It has especially focused on foundational literacy and numeracy in rural and tribal areas.
