Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government is preparing to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into the monitoring of major social welfare schemes to improve efficiency, transparency, and accountability. The Social Welfare Department is working on an AI-based system that will help detect irregularities, verify beneficiary data, and ensure that only eligible applicants receive benefits under schemes such as old-age pensions, scholarships, family benefit programs, and mass marriage assistance. A recent workshop in Lucknow on the use of AI in social welfare, attended by Social Welfare Minister Asim Arun, highlighted the role of technology in strengthening scheme monitoring.
The initiative comes in response to recurring issues of duplication and fraudulent claims in welfare programs. AI-driven verification is expected to reduce delays by instantly flagging suspicious applications for further scrutiny, while allowing genuine beneficiaries to receive approvals more quickly. The department has already introduced a one-time registration number for students under the scholarship scheme, eliminating the need for repeated registrations. This, coupled with AI integration, is aimed at creating a paperless and faster application process.
Officials note that AI will support real-time monitoring of schemes like the National Family Benefit Programme and old-age pensions, while data analytics will help in identifying trends and preventing misuse. By reducing paperwork and limiting human discretion in beneficiary identification, the system is expected to strengthen accountability and improve public trust. The Social Welfare Department is finalizing a detailed action plan for implementation, marking a shift toward technology-driven governance in welfare delivery across Uttar Pradesh.
