Kolkata: The West Bengal government has announced the Shramashree rehabilitation scheme for migrant workers forced to return home following persecution in some states.
Under the scheme, each returning worker will receive a one-time grant of Rs 5000, including travel assistance.
In addition, there will be a monthly rehabilitation allowance of Rs 5000 for one year or until a new job is arranged for them.
The beneficiaries will also be provided with Khadya Sathi ration cards, Swasthya Sathi health insurance and guaranteed school admission for their children.
The scheme will cover those voluntarily returning to the state from among 22.40 lakh workers registered with the state government’s migrant workers’ portal.
The Chief Secretary will monitor the entire process. Around 10,000 workers from 2,700-odd affected families have already returned to West Bengal in recent months.
The Labour Department would be nodal to the scheme. They would assure employment opportunities, besides skill development training
Under the Karmashree scheme, these workers will also be provided with job cards
