Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has announced plans to establish a “Space City” near Tirupati to facilitate private satellite manufacturing and launch operations. The project, aligned with the state’s “Andhra Pradesh Space Policy 4.0,” aims to attract private investment and generate employment in the growing space sector. Officials said Tirupati was chosen due to its proximity to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, giving the region a logistical advantage for developing an ecosystem around satellite launches. A second space city has also been proposed at Lepakshi, though its specific focus has not been outlined.
The initiative reflects the government’s broader strategy to position Andhra Pradesh as a hub for advanced technologies and high-value industries. Alongside the space sector, the state is also working on creating a “Quantum Valley” in Amaravati, designed to support universities, research institutions, startups, and companies in the field of quantum computing. These proposals are part of a larger push to diversify the state’s economy by attracting industries beyond traditional manufacturing and services.
While the government has signaled its intent to replicate global trends in space privatization, analysts suggest that the outcome will depend on policy execution, clarity on industry participation, and sustained investment. Andhra Pradesh’s geographic and institutional advantages may offer opportunities, but the projects will require careful planning to translate ambition into measurable results in India’s expanding private space economy.
