New Delhi: Tata Communications has won a contract from the Ministry of Finance to build and operate the digital infrastructure for the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT). The tribunal, recently notified as a body to handle GST-related disputes, will function through its principal bench in New Delhi and 31 state-level benches.
The project involves establishing secure and scalable digital systems that will connect all benches across the country. Tata Communications will provide network infrastructure, cloud services, cybersecurity tools, and video conferencing facilities to support the functioning of the tribunal. The system will also include software-defined networking and integrated management to ensure smooth operations.
The GSTAT is expected to play a central role in resolving tax disputes, offering taxpayers and authorities a structured platform for appeals. According to officials, the digital setup is being designed to automate key processes, streamline case management, and strengthen data security. Features such as predictive analytics and chatbots are planned to aid in handling cases and improving stakeholder communication.
The move comes as part of the government’s broader agenda of building digital governance frameworks in core sectors, including taxation. With consistent connectivity across benches, the new system is aimed at ensuring uniform access and faster resolution of cases nationwide.
The creation of GSTAT marks a significant step in strengthening the institutional framework for GST, which has faced a growing number of disputes since its rollout in 2017. By equipping the tribunal with technology-driven infrastructure, authorities seek to improve transparency and efficiency in tax administration while reducing the burden on courts.
This development reflects a shift toward digital platforms in dispute resolution, positioning GSTAT as a key part of India’s ongoing efforts to modernize its governance and service delivery systems.
