New Delhi: Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, on 4 September, announced a major boost to India’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem with the inauguration of TDK Corporation’s AT Advanced Technologies plant in Haryana.
The facility will produce lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries for mobile phones, wearables, hearables and laptops.
Calling it “a very important milestone for us,” Vaishnaw said the plant will have the capacity to manufacture around 200 million battery packs annually, which equals about 20 crore units.
He added, “Our requirement for the country in the mobile phone sector is about 50 crore cell packs every year. So that means about 40 per cent of the capacity will be met by this factory. This factory has a huge expansion scope.”
Vaishnaw highlighted that this development is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. “Step by step, practically every component is now going to be manufactured in our country. Whether it is camera modules, PCB assembly, semiconductors or batteries, every component will be manufactured in our country over the next few years,” he said.
The project has been facilitated under the central government’s Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) scheme with strong support from the Haryana government. The factory is also expected to create direct employment for around 5,000 people, with training already conducted at the AT Bawal plant.
“The arrival of this kind of advanced technology in India is a major milestone,” the Vaishnaw noted, thanking the Prime Minister for his continuous focus on strengthening electronics manufacturing in the country.
