Chennai: Ford Motor Company has declared plans to invest Rs 3,250 crore in India, which would represent a substantial return to the nation’s manufacturing landscape and significantly boost Tamil Nadu’s automobile industry.
The company has announced that it will restart operations at the Ford Chennai plant, concentrating on producing brand-new, cutting-edge engines.

In a social media post, Chief Minister M K Stalin said: “Ford returns to Tamil Nadu with full throttle! A powerful comeback that renews a long and trusted partnership, as Ford invests Rs. 3,250 crore in Tamil Nadu to set up a Next Gen Engine Manufacturing Unit at its plant at Maraimalai Nagar. This major investment will create 600 direct jobs and build on Tamil Nadu’s robust automobile ancillary ecosystem. Ford’s decision to choose India’s automobile capital for production of such futuristic engines is another testimony for Tamil Nadu’s industrial prowess and its indispensable position in the global manufacturing supply chain! Welcome back!”

By sending a Letter of Intent (LOI) to the State government in September of last year, during Chief Minister Stalin’s visit to the United States, Ford, which had suspended operations at its Maraimalai Nagar manufacturing facility in 2021, indicated interest in resuming production in Tamil Nadu.
Building on the LOI, Ford and the Tamil Nadu government have now signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) “outlining the strategic direction that leverages India’s manufacturing expertise as part of the Ford+ plan.”
The Ford Chennai plant is anticipated to have a planned capacity of 2.35 lakh engines annually and production is scheduled to start in 2029, according to the company, which says the project will start later this year.
“We are pleased to advance our plans and confirm the Chennai plant’s vital role in Ford’s manufacturing network,” said Jeff Marentic, President, International Markets Group, Ford Motor Company. “We are thankful to the government of Tamil Nadu for its continued support as we advance these plans. This decision reinforces our commitment to leveraging India’s manufacturing prowess for future products.”
