In 1939, two Stanford graduates, Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard, set up shop in a small one-car garage in Palo Alto, California, creating what would later be known as the “birthplace of Silicon Valley.” They decided to name their company ‘Hewlett-Packard’ (HP) after a coin toss determined the order of their names.
Their first product, an audio oscillator, was sold to Walt Disney Studios and laid the foundation for Hewlett-Packard’s reputation for innovation and precision. What started as a humble experiment soon transformed into one of the world’s first great technology companies!
HP’s growth through the decades has been marked by groundbreaking inventions in computing, printing, and enterprise solutions. By the 1960s and 70s, it had become a global player, driving both business and consumer technologies.
HP first entered India in 1964, but its business began to grow significantly after forming an agreement with Blue Star Ltd. in 1970. Blue Star, founded in 1943 in Mumbai as a refrigeration equipment company, managed all of HP’s operations in India until 1989. That year, the two companies jointly established Hewlett-Packard India as a separate entity to tap more effectively into the Indian market. In 1997, Hewlett-Packard India became fully independent from Blue Star.
Today, HP operates as a global technology leader, offering cutting-edge products across personal systems, printing solutions, and digital services. In India, it holds a strong market presence with a focus on sustainability, hybrid work solutions, and digital literacy initiatives.
From a modest garage in California to empowering millions globally, HP’s journey reflects how innovation, adaptability, and vision can transform not just a company but entire industries.
