New Delhi: Ola Electric has become the first Indian two-wheeler electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer to receive government certification for its indigenously developed rare-earth-free ferrite motor. The certification marks a major technological milestone, enabling the company to reduce dependence on imported rare-earth permanent magnet motors.
The Bengaluru-based firm announced that the certification was granted by the Global Automotive Research Centre (GARC) in Tamil Nadu after the motor successfully cleared a series of rigorous performance and power verification tests under AIS 041 standards. These Automotive Industry Standards are issued by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
According to Ola Electric, its ferrite motor has demonstrated performance and efficiency comparable to rare-earth permanent magnet motors across both 7 kW and 11 kW variants. The new motor, which was first unveiled during the company’s Sankalp 2025 event in August this year, offers enhanced durability and efficiency while significantly reducing production costs and minimising supply chain risks linked to rare-earth material imports.
With the certification in place, Ola Electric said it will soon begin integrating the ferrite motor across its product lineup. The company stated that this development will strengthen its commitment to affordability, sustainability and performance for India’s growing base of electric two-wheeler users.
