Itanagar: The Indian Army’s Gajraj Corps has operationalised an indigenous mono-rail system at an altitude of 16,000 feet in the Kameng Himalayas of Arunachal Pradesh, marking a significant advancement in high-altitude logistics.
According to Lt Col Mahendra Rawat, the system was conceptualised, engineered and deployed to overcome one of the toughest operational challenges in the region, ensuring uninterrupted supply to forward posts often cut off by snow, harsh terrain and unpredictable weather.
Operating in the unforgiving Kameng Himalayas, where steep cliffs and extreme altitude frequently disrupt vital supply routes, the Army required an innovative solution to sustain troops throughout the year.
The newly deployed mono-rail can carry over 300 kg of load in a single run, significantly improving the movement of mission-critical stores, ammunition, rations, fuel, engineering equipment and other heavy supplies across steep, unstable gradients where traditional transport does not function effectively.
Lt Col Rawat said the system remains fully operational even in severe weather conditions, ensuring reliable logistics support in some of India’s harshest military environments.
The mono-rail system can also aid in rapid casualty evacuation, providing a safe alternative in zones where helicopter evacuation is impossible and evacuation on foot is slow and risky.
