New Delhi: The Department of Posts has embarked on a major transformation drive to position itself as a leading public logistics organisation, undertaking large-scale upgrades to its parcel processing, delivery systems and digital infrastructure.
The initiatives were detailed by Union Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, Dr Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on 4 December.
To boost parcel efficiency nationwide, the Department is modernising its processing ecosystem through standardised systems aimed at improving speed, reliability and customer experience. Last-mile delivery capacity has been strengthened with the introduction of Nodal Delivery Centres that enable mechanised and dedicated parcel delivery.
Key technology interventions have been rolled out under the Advanced Postal Technology (APT) 2.0 project, including real-time delivery updates, OTP-based delivery and API integration for e-commerce and institutional customers.
In parallel, the Mail and Parcel Optimisation Project (MPOP) is driving end-to-end automation with standardised workflows, parcel sorters and real-time tracking tools.
The Department is also expanding partnerships with major e-commerce and logistics firms while supporting government ministries such as MSME for parcel services. To bolster exports from small businesses, a network of 1,013 Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras has been established across rural and semi-urban regions.
On the digital front, the “Know Your DIGIPIN” application has been launched as the foundational layer of the national Digital Address Digital Public Infrastructure.
Further, a new Central Sector Scheme, DHRUVA, has been finalised to develop an Address-as-a-Service framework, recognising address data management as critical public infrastructure for governance and service delivery.
The transformation will be implemented in phases, aligned with recommendations under the Mail and Parcel Optimisation Project.
