Kolkata: Justice (Retired) Rabindranath Samanta has been appointed to the post of Lokayukta of Bengal on 1 December.
Justice Samanta, a retired Calcutta High Court Judge, is currently the chairperson of the WBRERA appellate tribunal.
He will replace Justice Ashim Kunar Roy, another retired HC judge whose term has ended.
Once the notification for the appointment is issued, Justice Samavta has to resign from his present post.
The Lokayukta is a quasi-judicial office to probe corruption complaints against public functionaries.
Bengal’s Lokayukta Act, 2003, was amended in 2018 and 2023 to modify the appointment process and qualifications of the Lokayukta’s office.
In addition, Justice Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya was reappointed as chairperson of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission for another three years.
Justice Madhumati Mitra was also reappointed for three years as a member of the Commission.
