New Delhi: Aster DM Healthcare is preparing for an expansion in India following its merger with Quality Care India Ltd (QCIL).
After separating its GCC business two years ago, the company is sharpening its focus on India, now identified as its fastest-growing and largest market.
Founder-chairman Azad Moopen said the restructuring has enabled sharper capital allocation, quicker decision-making, and a clearer strategic direction. The demerger has positioned the company to deploy resources more efficiently and scale operations in underserved regions across the country.
The investment plan
The India-listed hospital chain plans to invest around Rs. 2,300 crore to add 2,368 beds through a mix of greenfield projects and selective acquisitions over the next few years. Of this, approximately Rs. 350 crore had already been deployed in key projects as of September last year.
The expansion will extend beyond Aster’s traditional strongholds of Kerala and Karnataka. While southern markets will remain central to growth, the company is preparing to widen its geographic footprint.
Moopen also indicated that Aster would assess its capital requirements following the merger and business separation. The company may consider strategic fundraising if it aligns with investment priorities and enhances shareholder value.
Merger to create top hospital platform
The merger with Blackstone-backed QCIL, which houses brands such as CARE Hospitals and KIMS Health, is expected to create one of India’s top three hospital chains by revenue and bed capacity.
The combined entity, to be known as Aster Quality Care, will integrate four brands—Aster DM, CARE Hospitals, KIMS, and Evercare. The merged platform aims to expand total capacity to around 14,710 beds in the coming years, up from the current 10,265 beds.
New hospitals and capacity additions
Key additions include two new hospitals in Bengaluru with capacities of 430 and 500 beds. The company is also expanding operations at Aster CMI Hospital and Aster Whitefield. In Kerala, plans include a 454-bed hospital in Thiruvananthapuram and a 100-bed expansion at Aster Medcity in Kochi.
Currently, Aster operates more than 918 facilities, including hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, and diagnostic centres, across seven countries.
