Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated several development projects in Assam, including the new campus of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Guwahati.Â
The Prime Minister virtually launched the institute’s temporary campus, marking a major push for higher and management education in the Northeast.
The Centre had approved the establishment of IIM Guwahati last year. It becomes the second IIM in the Northeast after IIM Shillong and the 22nd IIM in the country. The permanent campus will be built at Palasbari near Guwahati, while academic sessions will begin at a transit campus in Tech City, Bongora. IIM Ahmedabad will oversee the initial arrangements.
The institute will be set up with an investment of Rs. 555 crore. Parliament cleared the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, last August, enabling the new IIM to admit students.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the new institute will strengthen India’s ambition to become the world’s third-largest economy. IIM Guwahati is the ninth IIM established since 2014. Between 1961 and 2014, 13 IIMs were set up. Student intake has also expanded significantly, rising from 3,500 in 2013-14 to 9,800 in 2024-25, reflecting the growing demand for management education across the country.
