New Delhi: Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced a record allocation of Rs 17,366 crore for railway infrastructure development in Gujarat for the 2026-27 financial year, marking a sharp rise compared to previous years.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Gujarat Semiconnect Conference 2026, Vaishnaw said that between 2009 and 2014, during the United Progressive Alliance government, Gujarat received only Rs 589 crore in railway funding. He said the present allocation reflects a substantial expansion in investment aimed at accelerating the modernisation of the state’s rail network.
The minister noted that railway projects worth Rs 1.28 lakh crore are currently underway in Gujarat. As part of the Amrit Station Scheme, 87 stations in the state have been identified for upgradation into world-class facilities, with work completed at 21 stations so far.
Key stations, including Ahmedabad, Sabarmati, Surat, Una and Somnath, are being redeveloped, with upgraded passenger amenities planned at Ahmedabad station.
On the country’s first high-speed rail corridor, Vaishnaw said the government aims to operationalise the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor next year. Once functional, the train is expected to cover the Ahmedabad-Mumbai route in 1 hour and 57 minutes at a speed of 350 kmph.
