New Delhi: The Department of Telecommunications will examine the recommendations put forward by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) regarding the upcoming spectrum auction, Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said.
TRAI recently released its suggestions for the next round of spectrum sales, proposing measures including easing entry barriers to encourage greater participation in the sector. Spectrum, a finite and critical resource for telecom operators, forms the backbone of mobile and broadband services.
Speaking on the matter, Scindia said the DoT will evaluate TRAI’s recommendations before taking a final decision on the structure and timing of the next auction.
TRAI proposed that airwaves across multiple bands – 600 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2500 MHz, 3300 MHz and 26 GHz – be offered to telecom service providers.
The regulator has suggested making a total of 11,790 MHz of spectrum available, with an estimated value of around Rs 2.1 lakh crore.
