Chennai, June 6, 2026: Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai has embarked on a new political journey, announcing the launch of ‘We The Leaders’.
This is a movement he intends to eventually convert into a political party ahead of the next Assembly elections.
For Annamalai, the move marks yet another chapter in a career that has seen him transition from a police officer to one of the most recognizable political faces in Tamil Nadu.

Born in Karur district in 1984, Annamalai studied engineering at PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, before earning an MBA from IIM Lucknow.
He joined the Indian Police Service in 2011 and was allotted the Karnataka cadre.
As Superintendent of Police in districts such as Udupi and Chikkamagaluru, he earned a reputation for tough policing and a hands-on style, leading many to dub him the “Singham” officer.
In 2019, he resigned from the IPS. A year later, he entered politics by joining the BJP.
Despite electoral setbacks, including defeats in the 2021 Assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Annamalai emerged as one of the party’s most prominent leaders in the South and served as Tamil Nadu BJP chief.
Now, seeking to chart an independent course, he has unveiled ‘We The Leaders’ and announced the establishment of the APJ Abdul Kalam Centre for Ethics and Politics to train future leaders.
Announcing his new venture, Annamalai said the movement would stand for clean, honest and efficient politics.
He criticized personality cults and dynastic politics and advocated term limits for elected representatives.
Positioning himself as a “proud Tamil with an Indian identity,” Annamalai said Tamil and Indian identities complement each other and should not be viewed in conflict.
With ‘We The Leaders’, the former IPS officer is now attempting to build a political force from the ground up, an experiment that could reshape Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
