Noida, June 1 (APAC Media): The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) Chief Executive Officer, Saurabh Vijay, has been assigned additional charge to lead the India AI mission, officials said.
Vijay, a 1998-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Maharashtra cadre, recently took over as CEO of UIDAI, the agency responsible for Aadhaar-based digital identity services in the country.
According to officials, the additional responsibility is aimed at strengthening coordination between India’s digital identity infrastructure and the government’s artificial intelligence initiatives under the IndiaAI Mission.
The mission is focused on building a comprehensive AI ecosystem to promote research, innovation and deployment of artificial intelligence across governance and public service delivery.
The IndiaAI Mission is one of the government’s key programmes to advance the adoption of AI technologies in sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture and digital governance.
Officials said the integration of UIDAI’s digital public infrastructure with AI-led systems is expected to enhance efficiency, scalability and citizen-centric service delivery.
Prior to his current appointment, Vijay has served in several administrative roles in both state and central governments, including key positions on central deputation.
His experience in public administration and technology-driven governance is expected to support the objectives of the AI mission.
Officials said the decision reflects the government’s focus on leveraging existing digital infrastructure, including Aadhaar, to support emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.
The development comes as India continues to expand its digital public infrastructure ecosystem, with emphasis on secure, data-driven and technology-enabled governance systems, officials added.
