Itanagar, July 15 (APAC Media): Arunachal Pradesh has signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Norwegian firm Tidal Sail AS to implement a 500 kW River Kinetic Energy Demonstration Project.
Marking the beginning of India’s first-ever river kinetic energy demonstration plant, the agreement was finalised between the state’s Centre for Earth Sciences & Himalayan Studies (CES&HS) and Tidal Sail AS under the bilateral India-Norway Green Partnership.
Harnessing River Currents Without Dams
Backed by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, alongside Innovation Norway, the project introduces a cutting-edge technology designed to generate electricity directly from flowing river currents.
This approach completely bypasses the need for large dams or intensive civil infrastructure, offering an environmentally sustainable and cost-effective renewable energy solution.
Science and Technology Minister Dasanglu Pul hailed the partnership as a major milestone for the state’s green energy transition, highlighting how Arunachal Pradesh’s vast river network can be utilised responsibly to bolster local energy security.
Expanding Norway-India Green Alliances
Expressing strong support for the venture, Norwegian Ambassador to India May-Elin Stener emphasised that the state’s extensive river systems make it the perfect proving ground for river kinetic technology.
She noted that this pilot project will complement existing renewable sources while paving the way for deeper bilateral cooperation.
The initiative signals a broader, long-term collaboration between Norway and Arunachal Pradesh across other sustainable sectors, including geothermal energy, geotechnical engineering, and eco-friendly infrastructure development.
