New Delhi, July 22 (APAC Media): The Centre has said that more than 77 lakh FASTag Annual Passes have been issued as of June 2026, with users recording over 63 crore transactions on National Highway fee plazas.
The government also announced the expansion of barrier free toll collection using AI powered technology at highways across the country.
The details were shared by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
FASTag Annual Pass Gains Momentum
The FASTag-based Annual Pass for non-commercial cars, jeeps and vans came into effect on August 15, 2025.
Priced at ₹3,075 for 2026-27, the pass allows travel through all National Highway and National Expressway toll plazas for one year or up to 200 crossings, whichever comes first.
According to the government, Annual Pass transactions now account for around 33% of all electronic toll collections made by cars, jeeps and vans, helping improve operational efficiency and commuter convenience.
Over 98% Toll Collection Now Digital
The government said more than 98% of toll collections on National Highways are now processed through the FASTag-based National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) system.
The electronic system operates through a secure network involving toll operators, acquiring banks, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and FASTag issuing banks, ensuring transparency and real-time transaction records.
AI-Based Barrier-Free Tolling Rolled Out
To enable seamless travel, the government is implementing Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), Artificial Intelligence and existing FASTag RFID technology.
The system will allow vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping or slowing down, with user fees deducted automatically.
Five Toll Plazas Already Operational
The project has been awarded for 17 toll plazas across the country. Of these, five plazas have already become operational.
These include Choryasi (Gujarat), Mundka (Delhi), Gharaunda (Haryana), Manoharpura (Rajasthan) and Daulatpura (Rajasthan).
The remaining projects are at various stages of implementation.
104 More Toll Plazas in Next Phase
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has also invited bids for implementing barrier-free tolling at 104 additional fee plazas across multiple states.
The initiative is aimed at reducing congestion, cutting travel time and improving the overall efficiency of India’s highway network.
Multiple Channels for Toll Grievances
The government said road users can report toll-related issues through the 1033 National Highways helpline, the dedicated FASTag grievance email, FASTag issuer bank helplines and the RajmargYatra App.
These platforms have been established to ensure quick and transparent resolution of complaints.
GPS-Based Tolling Under Review
The government said expert committees have recommended further deliberations before implementing a GPS-based barrier-free tolling system, citing operational, security and privacy considerations.
For now, the Centre will continue expanding the AI-enabled ANPR and FASTag-based barrier-free tolling system across the National Highway network.
