New Delhi, August 17(APAC Media): Reliance Industries and Rolls-Royce are teaming up on a problem that has long challenged India’s fighter aircraft programme: building a powerful indigenous engine.
The companies plan to develop, manufacture and deliver a combat aircraft engine for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. The deal could have a long-term impact on India’s defence manufacturing plans and reduce dependence on foreign engine suppliers.
AMCA Engine Becomes The Key Focus
The AMCA is planned as India’s next-generation fighter aircraft, but developing its engine remains one of the programme’s biggest challenges. India has been working for years to build advanced aero-engine technology, but has yet to achieve a high-thrust engine for a modern fighter aircraft at the required scale.
Amit Anwani, Vice President- Institutional Research at PL Capital Group, said the Reliance-Rolls-Royce partnership could help address this supply challenge. He expects the benefits for India’s defence sector to emerge over the next 10-15 years.
Why Rolls-Royce Matters
Rolls-Royce brings experience in developing aircraft engines, while Reliance could add private-sector investment and manufacturing capabilities. The partnership is also expected to support the development of an aerospace gas turbine complex in India.
Air Marshal Anil Chopra said the project is important because only a small number of countries have the capability to develop advanced aircraft engines. For India, the larger objective is to build its own technology and intellectual property.
The partnership also highlights the growing role of private companies in India’s defence sector. Government data cited by Chopra puts India’s defence production at Rs 1.78 lakh crore, while defence exports have crossed Rs 38,000 crore.
Private companies now account for a significant share of defence exports, showing how the sector is gradually moving beyond its traditional dependence on state-owned manufacturers.
For the AMCA programme, however, the real test will be whether the partnership can turn engine development into a reliable Indian manufacturing capability. That could determine how quickly India can scale up its next-generation fighter aircraft programme.
