Mumbai: Maharashtra government has decided to provide the Covid vaccine first to its around 2.6 lakh healthcare workers in the government sector including doctors, nurses and other paramedic staff.
The state government on Wednesday held its first review meeting on the preparation for vaccination, where facilities of storage and transportation and setting up of vaccination booths were discussed besides the initial beneficiaries, media reports said.
There is no finalisation yet on which vaccine will be approved or by what time it will be available in the market even as Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech vaccines are almost ready to be rolled out.
The beneficiaries also include frontline workers such as police, home guard, paramilitary forces, state and central reserve forces as well as the people who are above 50 years of age and are suffering from co-morbidities, a Maharashtra health department official was quoted as saying.
Frontline workers and those above 50 will be vaccinated at booths set up at hospitals, schools, community centres and other designated places.
The state government has readied one central cold storage facility to store the vaccine. Besides, there are smaller facilities at divisional and district levels.
