Union education minister, Dharmendra Pradhan and minister for electronics and information technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw tested the ‘BharOS’, a mobile operating system developed by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM).
An IITM-incubated firm, JandK Operations private limited, developed the Atmanirbhar mobile operating system for security and privacy of users. The service is currently used by organisations with stringent privacy and security requirements whose users handle sensitive information that requires confidential communications on restricted apps on mobiles.
According to a recent IITM press statement, the BharOS service provides access to apps from organisation-specific private app store services (PASS). This PASS gives a user access to a curated list of apps that meet security and privacy standards of the organisation.
The operating system allows users to have more control over the permissions that apps have on their device, giving them an option to choose apps that they trust to access certain features or data on their device.
While testing the BharOS, Education minister, Dharmendra Pradhan said how the poor people of India will be the main beneficiaries of a strong, independent and self-reliant digital infrastructure. He further added that promoting policy enablers with the whole of the government approach is an applied experiment of PM Narendra Modi’s vision and that ‘BharOS’ is a successful step towards data privacy.
