New Delhi: The Mussoorie Sky Car Company Pvt. Ltd., a consortium led by FIL Industries Private Ltd. in collaboration with POMA SAS France and SRM Engineering LLP, has started construction on India’s longest ropeway system, spanning over 5.5 kilometres and linking Dehradun and Mussoorie.
With a budget of Rs 300 crore, this mono-cable ropeway project aims to connect Dehradun and Mussoorie. It is slated for completion by September 2026.
The ropeway will reduce the 33-kilometre driving distance between Dehradun and Mussoorie, which can take anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours due to traffic, down to just 15 minutes.
This ropeway will feature 10-seater cabins, a first in India, with enclosed, fully ventilated, glazed, automatic opening and closing doors. Initially, these cabins will have the capacity to transport up to 1300 passengers per hour, per direction.
Operating year-round, the all-weather ropeway will significantly reduce traffic congestion in the region, particularly during peak tourist seasons. This is the first ropeway in India designed for both tourism and urban mobility between these two cities in Uttarakhand.
Owais Altaf Syed, Group Director of FIL Industries Limited said, “We are very excited to launch this mega ropeway project in the state of Uttarakhand, FIL Industries’ second ropeway project in India, after our very successfully running Skyview by Empyrean project in Patnitop, Jammu. The Mussoorie-Dehradun sustainable ropeway project is being built with state-of-the-art, world-class infrastructure. Once ready, it will not only provide a source of employment and bring in revenue to the state; it will also attract tourists from across the world, contributing considerably to the state GDP.”
FIL Industries Pvt. Ltd. has been a pioneer in developing sustainable tourism destinations, with Skyview by Empyrean in Patnitop, Jammu being a prime example of their commitment to responsible tourism in India.
FIL’s Skyview Gondola, also known as the ‘Green Gondola,’ enabled travel between Sanget Valley and Patnitop, reducing road travel time by over an hour and cutting vehicular pollution.
Drawing from this success, Mussoorie Sky Car Company Private Limited aims to create a thriving ecosystem in Uttarakhand that preserves the mountains through a range of modern urban mobility solutions. The project also envisions integrated infrastructure development, including hospitality, food and beverages, as well as retail facilities, which will stimulate the local economies of both Dehradun and Mussoorie.
