New Delhi: Arindam Bagchi, spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), has been appointed as the permanent representative of India to the United Nations (UN) and other international organisations in Geneva.
Bagchi is an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from the 1995-batch. He was appointed spokesperson of the MEA in March 2021. He is known for handling several critical issues and developments, which include the eastern Ladakh border row, India’s response to Covid-19 and New Delhi’s G20 presidency.
Bagchi is taking over this post, in Geneva, from Indra Mani Pandey, who is set to return to New Delhi soon.
MEA’s statement read, “Arindam Bagchi (IFS:1995), presently Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, has been appointed as the next Ambassador/Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations and other International Organisations in Geneva. He is expected to take up the assignment shortly.”
Senior diplomats, including the joint secretary of G20 Nagaraj Naidu Kakanur and K Nandini Singla, high commissioners to Mauritius, are now being considered for the position of MEA spokesperson.
Bagchi has served as the high commissioner to Sri Lanka, as well as the ambassador to Croatia. He has also worked as a director in the Prime Minister’s Office, and as India’s permanent mission at the UN in New York.
