Mumbai: IAS Nitin Kareer has officially assumed the position of Chief Secretary of Maharashtra on Sunday. His appointment comes following the Centre’s denial of an extension to the outgoing Chief Secretary, Manoj Saunik.
A 1988 batch officer, Kareer was previously serving as the Additional Chief Secretary in the Finance Department. He has received achievements such as being the recipient of the Satyen Mitra award for an exemplary adult literacy program in 1998 during his tenure as the Collector of Sangli.
Kareer also won the national e-governance first prize in 2002 for computerising land transactions in the Registration Department and the state-level first prize in 2013 for e-governance initiatives in the Sales Tax Department. He has been recognised internationally for his contribution to the development of an automated building plan approval system at the Pune Municipal Corporation.
