New Delhi: Meta, in collaboration with the Misinformation Combat Alliance (MCA), announced plans for a new fact-checking helpline on WhatsApp to combat the spread of deepfakes and AI-generated misinformation. This initiative aims to provide users with a resource to verify the authenticity of media content created through artificial intelligence.
Scheduled for launch next month, the helpline will enable users to flag suspicious content, including deepfakes, to a dedicated WhatsApp chatbot available in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. Messages sent by users will be forwarded to a network of independent fact-checkers and research organisations for assessment and verification.
The program, supported by Meta and the MCA, emphasises a four-pillar approach: detection, prevention, reporting, and raising awareness about the proliferation of deepfakes. It seeks to equip citizens with reliable information to counteract the spread of misinformation.
While Meta focuses on developing the chatbot, the MCA is establishing a central ‘deepfake analysis unit’ to handle incoming messages. Meta has partnered with 11 independent fact-checking organisations to identify and verify misinformation on the platform.
