New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced a temporary halt to exchanging or depositing Rs 2,000 banknotes on Monday, April 1, 2024, at its 19 offices across India. This pause is because of the yearly account closing activities. Normal services will resume on Tuesday, April 2, 2024.
Earlier, on May 19, 2023, the RBI withdrew Rs 2,000 banknotes from circulation. As of February 29, around 97.62% of these notes have been returned, leaving about Rs 8,470 crore still with the public.
People holding Rs 2,000 notes can deposit or exchange them at any of the 19 RBI offices nationwide. Alternatively, they can send the notes through India Post for credit to their bank accounts.
Initially, the deadline for exchanging or depositing these notes was September 30, 2023, later extended to October 7, 2023. Bank branches stopped these services on October 7.
Since October 8, 2023, individuals have had the option to exchange the currency or have the equivalent amount credited to their bank accounts at RBI offices.
The 19 RBI offices facilitating the exchange or deposit of these notes are located in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram.
