New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu awarded the Bharat Ratna to LK Advani, a veteran BJP leader, on Sunday. The decision was made considering Advani’s declining health, with the President personally visiting his residence to honour him. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also present during the ceremony.
Advani was born in present-day Pakistan in 1927. He has had a long political career, where he remained the longest serving President of BJP. He has also held several key roles like Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
He is respected for his intelligence, principles, and dedication to India’s progress. Vajpayee praised Advani’s commitment to nationalism and his ability to adapt politically.
This year the Bharat Ratna was also awarded to four notable figures: former Prime Ministers Chaudhary Charan Singh and PV Narasimha Rao, former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur, and agronomist MS Swaminathan.
